Class Action against iPhone 4

There’s been a lot of buzz about the Apple iPhone 4, from the moment it was leaked to its unveiling. Now the buzz continues, but the news isn’t so good for Apple. Owners of the new phone have complained that their calls keep dropping, citing defective design: if they hold the phone normally, their hand blocks the antenna’s signal. Apple issued a letter explaining that the sudden drop in signal comes from an erroneous signal-calculating formula, which causes the phone to show more bars than are actually available. According the the press release, new software updates will be available soon for all iPhone 4 users.

A series of class action suits against the Tech giant claim that this release is hardly sufficient and fails to address the real problem of customer use.

“Apple’s solution to the design problem inherent in the iPhone4 is to tell consumers to hold the phone in a manner inconsistent with normal cell phone use, or alternatively purchase a rubber ‘bumper’ type case that is so far not widely available to the general public,” says lead plaintiff Hung Nguyen. Mason LLP has filed a suit asking the company to send such protective cases for the iPhone 4 to all consumers, on top of monetary damages.

These class action suits include anyone in the US who bought an iPhone 4 since June 24th.
