Requesting a Free iPhone 4 Case or Bumper

Now there’s an app for that – that is, requesting an iPhone 4 case or bumper.  Following up from our previous post, “iPhone 4 Class Action Update: Users Get Bumped Up“, Apple has created an App called, “iPhone 4 Case Program” to provide a free case or bumper to purchases of the iPhone 4.  The free cases are provided in order to solve the reception problems caused by the antennae of the iPhone 4, and to quiet the complaints by reviewers and individuals who have experienced drops in reception and calls due to the design flaw.

Apple sent an email to iPhone 4 purchasers last Friday providing instructions on how to request a free iPhone case or bumper. The instructions are:

1. Download the iPhone 4 Case Program app from the App Store.
2. Launch the app on your iPhone 4 and sign in using your iTunes Store account.
3. Select your Bumper or case.

Requesting a free iPhone 4 case or bumper – our test:
We tried to download the app ourselves.  Interestingly, Apple has made it a little trickier to find this app than usual, especially if you don’t have the link from the email.   Most of the time when you download an app, you do if from the App Store.  You can’t do that here, however, since “iPhone 4 Case Program” doesn’t show up in a search of the App Store, even when using an iPhone 4. So you need the link to the iPhone 4 Case Program to get started.  Seemingly, Apple is trying to limit the amount of people who download the app, and keep it just to actual owners of the iPhone 4.

Once you download the app on your iPhone 4 from the link above, you get to pick which case or bumper you would like from a list.  There are bumpers and cases, as well as clear and black models. All of them have long waits – at least 3-5 weeks.  We selected one, and received an email the next day confirming the order.  The charge was $0 and it’s a 5 week wait for delivery.

Requesting a refund if you already bought an iPhone 4 case or bumper:
According to Apple’s iPhone 4 Case Program informational page, people who have already purchased iPhone cases or bumpers from Apple can get a refund.  If you used a credit card, your refund is processed automatically by Apple.  If you used cash, check or a gift card in a physical Apple Store, you need to return to the Apple Store with your receipt to get a refund.  If you used a giftcard in the online Apple Store, you will automatically be mailed a replacement gift card in the amount of your iPhone 4 case or bumper.  If you purchased your iPhone 4 case or bumper from an AT&T store, you need to complete a rebate coupon and mail it in by September 30, 2010.
